Her father was Alvin Saunders Johnson, first president of the New School for Social Research.〔Jane Cooper, ("Astrith Deyrup Interview" ) (2004), Hudson River Valley Heritage project. This source also explains the uses of Johnson and Deyrup as surnames in their extended family.〕 She earned a degree in zoology from Barnard College in 1940, and a PhD in physiology from Columbia University in 1944.
